FEDERAL GRANTS: Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson recently received two federal grants totaling almost $700,000. One grant will be used for the recruitment of minorities into medical professions while the other will go toward training teachers to work with disabled and at-risk youth.
The U.S. Department of Education awarded a three-year $299,173 grant for an Early Intervention Specialist project that will recruit and train teachers from diverse backgrounds to work with disabled and at-risk children with similar backgrounds.
About 40 physical therapists, nurses, school psychologists and teachers will be trained to work with children up to age 5.
The School of Health received a $376,969 grant for a project aimed at recruiting qualified minority and disadvantaged high school students into the health profession. Project REACH--Recruit and Educate for Allied Careers in Health--will be funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The project will recruit a minimum of 150 students and introduce them to various medical fields through a summer outreach program.
