New Meaning to Use of Oils: Van Gogh, Renoir, Cezanne and Monet probably never imagined that their masterpieces would end up on salad dressing and balsamic vinegar labels one day. But that day has come. The Impressionist paintings are being used in an attempt to give a classy touch to a new line of Grey Poupon products, including specialty oils and cooking wines. The paintings include “Olive Pickers at St. Remy” by Vincent van Gogh and “Still Life With Onions and Bottle” by Paul Cezanne. Aside from possibly offending the memory of the painters, the company is taking some risk in trying to stretch the brand beyond mustard, said marketing consultant Jack Trout, president of Trout & Partners. “Over a period of time, what Grey Poupon stands for could lose meaning if you start to have Grey Poupon this and Grey Poupon that,” Trout said.
