The Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce named Los Cerritos Intermediate Schoolspecial education teacher Shelly Fletcher its Teacher of the Year at a special ceremony Thursday night.

Fletcher, who has been working in the Conejo Valley Unified School District since 1985, teaches students with learning disabilities at Los Cerritos Intermediate School. She also supervises the newspaper and yearbook staffs and started the school’s after-class drama program and four-part harmony singing groups.

In her application, Fletcher described the pursuit of her teaching credential as her proudest achievement.

“That beautiful piece of paper that allows me the opportunity to impact the life of another human being is my shining glory,” Fletcher wrote.

But it was not an easy road for Fletcher, who, as a single mother of three, returned to college in 1981 to pursue her undergraduate degree and teaching credential. She was hired by the district the day after receiving her credential.

Los Cerritos Principal Pat Pelletiersaid working with Fletcher is like working with one’s best friend.

“She’s just one of those people who relates very well to youngsters,” Pelletier said. “She does everything. As a special education teacher, she works wonders with youngsters that have many different disabilities.”
