South Bay : Torrance Goes Online to Serve the Public, Local Businesses

Share

Torrance has set up a rest stop on the information superhighway.

The city recently launched a World Wide Web home page at https://www.ci.torrance.ca.us enabling the public to interact with the city of Torrance 24 hours a day. The information systems department has set up the site, which provides information on city departments, census data, transit and bikeway maps, permit fees and recycling.

The Web site is funded by a $75,000 grant obtained through the Carson/Lomita/Torrance Private Industry Council, according to Katherine Jenno, information systems director. The organization hopes to make it possible for local businesses to advertise on the site, free of charge, and allow businesses to conduct transactions online.

Jenno said the city plans to add a number of services to the site to automate many city functions that are now conducted manually. In the next six months, she said, residents will be able to register for recreation classes, order theater tickets to Torrance Cultural Arts Center events and answer job bulletins. . . .
