Hilton Hotels Wins Right to Use Conrad Name Outside U.S.: The ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York was the outcome of a trademark-infringement lawsuit filed against Beverly Hills-based Hilton Hotels Corp. in 1991 by Hilton International Co. The Conrad hotel name is derived from that of company founder Conrad Hilton. Hilton International was spun off from Hilton Hotels in 1964. As part of the spinoff, Hilton Hotels received the rights to use the Hilton name within the United States and Hilton International received the rights to the name internationally. Hilton International had sought to prohibit Hilton Hotels from using the Conrad name outside the United States, saying it would infringe its exclusive rights.
