China Confident of Dam Project Funding: Zhang Songming, head of information at project developers China Yangtze Three Gorges Project Development Corp., said the country can choose from a long list of bidders. Five non-U.S. consortia have put in bids to supply the 26 power generators that will be required at Three Gorges Dam, which will be the world’s largest. Last month, the Clinton Administration urged the Export-Import Bank, the main U.S. credit agency, to oppose granting funding because of environmental and human rights concerns. The bank’s board will make the final decision. China estimates that total costs to build the dam in central China could reach $35 billion.
