Conrad on Powell

Share

I vehemently protest Conrad’s “My American Journey” (Drawingboard, Oct. 25) demeaning Colin L. Powell’s military service to the U.S. during the war in Vietnam and more recent armed conflicts and, yes, political misadventures

As a serving Army officer until his retirement, Powell was sworn to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution and was required to carry out all legal orders from his military and civilian superiors. Even as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Powell’s status continued to be that of a serving Army officer.

Powell constitutionally advised two U.S. presidents of the advantages and disadvantages of various national security strategies and recommened the most appropriate actions. And he faithfully executed a third President’s decisions to wage war against enemies of the U.S.

Conrad should be retired permanently. His cartoon depicting Powell as being responsible for all the sins and failures of the U.S. government for the last 25 years is irresponsible, uncalled for and sullies the reputation of a great American.

Given the nature of this attack, I can understand the reluctance of a good man to run for public office in these times.
