Surrounded by cheering supporters, Imelda Marcos was sworn in to the House of Representatives on Friday, five months after her landslide victory.

Election officials had disqualified Marcos as failing to meet residency requirements. But the Supreme Court dismissed their objections.

The 65-year-old widow of former President Ferdinand Marcos represents a district in her home province of Leyte in central Philippines.

Election officials said she had not lived there long enough to meet residency requirements for running for public office. Marcos, who spends much of her time in Manila, argued that she had maintained an official residence at her family’s mansion in the district.
