Mario Lemieux isn’t wasting any time showing the league what it missed without him last year.

Lemieux scored his second consecutive hat trick and goaltender Tom Barrasso had 41 saves as the Pittsburgh Penguins stole a 5-3 decision from the New Jersey Devils Saturday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

Lemieux, who sat out last year to recuperate after a bout with cancer, has nine goals and 20 points in seven games. He got three goals Thursday night against the Islanders, including the 500th of his career.

“I’m still not as quick as I was a year and a half ago,” Lemieux said. “I’m sure it’s going to come around.”

The Penguins won despite being outshot, 27-9, in the second period and 44-26 overall.

Montreal 5, Chicago 3--Red-hot Brian Savage scored three goals as the resurgent Canadiens fought their way back to the .500 mark with a victory over the Blackhawks at Montreal. Savage has seven goals in his last three games and 10 overall in 10 games this season.

N.Y. Islanders 5, Philadelphia 5--Derek King’s first goal of the season at 5:15 of the third period capped an Islanders’ comeback from their second two-goal deficit of the game, and allowed them to escape with a tie at Uniondale, N.Y., despite getting off to the worst start in franchise history (1-6-2).

Florida 4, Ottawa 1--Defenseman Robert Svehla had three assists and the Panthers ended the Senators’ three-game winning streak with a victory at Ottawa.

Dallas 4, San Jose 3--Despite an offense revitalized by this week’s acquisitions of Ray Sheppard and Owen Nolan, the Sharks remained winless as Trent Klatt’s tie-breaking goal with 15:12 remaining gave the Stars a victory at San Jose.

Boston 3, Hartford 0--Goaltender Craig Billington recorded the fifth shutout of his mostly backup career at Boston as the Bruins extended the Whalers’ winless streak to five games. Kevin Stevens, Ray Bourque and Joe Mullen scored.
