Valleywide : 6 Get U.S. Savings Bond Scholarships

Share

Six San Fernando Valley high school graduates were among 20 special education students to receive $10S. Savings Bond scholarship awards from the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Juan Valdovinos of Francis Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley, Robert Seelentag of North Hollywood High, Michael Berlonga of Granada Hills High, Benjamin Scott of Reseda High, Fredy Herrera of Taft High in Woodland Hills and Reyna Cubas of Verdugo Hills High in Tujunga competed with 150 Valley students to win new Career and Transition Services scholarship awards.

Teachers nominated the students on the basis of their academic excellence, leadership skills and interviews. A selection committee representing the region from the school district’s career and development office, which organized the program, then made the final decision. The six students now attend community colleges or vocational schools in the area. The scholarship program, which encourages disabled students to continue their education and training after completing high school, is supported by a donation from the Ethel M. Scantland Foundation.
