Latino March

Share

Are Roberto Rodriguez and Patrisia Gonzales really ready for a Latino march as stated in their Oct. 26 Column Left? I don’t think so. Why? The answer is the unity of one flag--the United States of America. The only way I, and many other Latinos I have spoken to, would participate in a march or any demonstration that could help improve the Latino cause is when I stop seeing flags other than the U.S. flag waving above my head.

As a Vietnam era veteran, I know firsthand that this is the sentiment of millions of Latinos who feel that the blood, sweat and tears that have been given to this country (in many forms) were given as Americans--or immigrants looking forward to earning this status. Therefore, I agree, Latinos are not passive, we just don’t know how to organize a demonstration under one flag that represents an American cause.

* The writers propose that a Latino march is in order for 1996. At this rate I should be able to participate in the “Irish French-Canadian Swiss Spanish Mexican-American” march in about 2020. Clearly, the only winners that will arise from the rubble of these silly “gimme” marches will be the airlines and Washington hotels.
