Valleywide : Scouts Will Canvass Homes for Food Aid
Troops of young men will stop by 25,000 homes in the west San Fernando Valley this weekend in search of food. On Saturday, more than 1,000 uniformed Boy Scouts will hang blue-and-white tags on doors asking residents for non-perishable foods, such as canned fruits, vegetables and soups, for the eighth annual Scouting for Food Campaign to restock local pantries and emergency centers.
The Scouts will canvass homes in the area from Corbin Street west to the Ventura County line in Westlake Village and Agoura Hills. Last year, the community donated 14,936 canned goods during the food drive.
Chris Rowe, chairperson for Scouting for Food, said that local pantries were depleted due to the earthquake last year and that the campaign will help replenish them to feed hungry families in the area.
The Scouts will return to the tagged homes Nov. 11 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to pick up the donated canned goods. Local pantries benefiting from the food drive are the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church in Woodland Hills, the Meals and Nutritional Assistance (MANA) food bank in Thousand Oaks, Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Friends in Service Here (FISH), an emergency center, both in Canoga Park.
