LAGUNA BEACH : 100-Ton Crane Topples at Tollway Construction Site

Share

A 100-ton crane being used in the construction of the San Joaquin Hills tollway tipped over and hit two other cranes Friday afternoon near Laguna Canyon Road, officials said.

No one was injured by the falling crane, which was lifting a steel column when it tipped over, collided with the other cranes and landed on its side, Transportation Corridor Agencies officials said.

Most of the workers at the construction site, where the tollway crosses over Laguna Canyon Road, were at lunch when the accident occurred shortly after noon.

The cranes are being used to build the 17.5-mile toll road, which will connect Newport Beach and San Juan Capistrano.

“There are any number of reasons that it could have [tipped over],” said Dan Howell of California Corridor Constructors, the primary contractor. “The load it was carrying was within the boundaries for the crane.”
