THOUSAND OAKS : Mall Sand Sculptures to Be Sold at Benefit

Share

Vases, wine bottles, books and other pieces of molded sand that now decorate the top of a huge sand sculpture inside The Oaks mall will be sold to the highest bidder at a silent auction next weekend.

At a benefit for the Alliance for the Arts, the nonprofit fund-raising arm of the Civic Arts Plaza, as many as 75 small sand sculptures will be offered to the public.

Minimum bids are from $15 to $100, with the highest opening bid set for a foot-tall Maltese falcon. Another 50 or so pieces will be sold at fixed prices, with the proceeds going to support the alliance.

“We thought the auction was a wonderful idea,” said Dick Johnson, campaign director for the Alliance for the Arts. “The success of the sculpture has been phenomenal.”

The public will be invited to bid on any of the pieces up for auction, but the sealed bids will not be opened until Nov. 13, Johnson said.

In addition to the auction, Civic Arts Plaza memorabilia also will be available, and door prizes will be awarded.

The towering sand sculpture was erected last year to honor the October opening of the Civic Arts Plaza. It was scheduled to be dismantled earlier this year, but mall officials extended its stay after public requests.

Bids will be taken from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 379-1966.
