South Bay : Bridge Lighting Plan Moves a Step Closer

Share

It’s taken nearly eight years, but plans to light the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro are almost a reality now that two artists have been selected to draft a lighting design.

Local artists George Stone and Ruck Goldreyer were chosen from a nationwide pool of applicants by the Vincent Thomas Bridge Lighting Committee, according to member Carol Rugnetta. The pair will conduct interviews with residents and the state Department of Transportation before coming up with a plan for lighting the bridge that connects San Pedro to Terminal Island.

Money has been obtained from the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, the Port of Los Angeles and fund-raising events. Rugnetta, the niece of the former Assembly member for whom the bridge is named, said the project is expected to cost about $380,000, with completion expected by the end of next year. Caltrans will be responsible for maintaining the lighting.

The committee has worked since 1987 to add the additional lights to the bridge to illuminate Los Angeles Harbor.
