HUNTINGTON BEACH : College President Takes Ventura County Post

After two years as president of Golden West College, Philip Westin) is leaving to become chancellor of the Ventura County Community College District early next year.

Westin, 50, will assume leadership of the Ventura college district, which has more than double the number of students Golden West has, on Jan. 2.

“This is the fruition of all that I have worked for,” Westin said Tuesday.

Westin beat out three other finalists for the new job at the 26,000-student, three-campus district in Ventura County.

“This is one of the top two or three districts in the state,” he said. “And it is the higher education system for the whole county. I am thrilled.”

Before being unanimously elected president of Golden West College in 1993, Westin was the institution’s vice president of instruction for two years. He also served as chair of Cerritos College’s music department and dean of fine arts at El Camino College in Torrance.

His appointment was announced Monday by the Ventura County Community College District Board of Trustees.
