TUSTIN : OCTA Funding Pact for Rail Station Land OKd
To buy land for a future Metrolink rail station, the city has signed a funding agreement with the Orange County Transportation Authority.
The station, planned for a 3.6-acre parcel at 3075 Edinger Ave., will connect rail lines between Oceanside and Los Angeles and between Irvine and the Inland Empire, OCTA spokesman John Sandiford said. He described Tustin as “a high-priority connection.”
Under the agreement, the authority will release $1.9 million in funds from Measure M, the 1990 transportation sales tax that generates $132 million a year.
The money will be enough to buy the land, officials said, but not enough for the projected $4-million cost of the station. The city previously set aside about $2 million for construction and is seeking to raise another $2 million from county and state transportation grants.
The city plans to purchase the land within a few months and to begin construction as soon as it has the money, officials said.
The rail station would be near Jamboree Plaza at Jamboree Road and Edinger Avenue.
