FILLMORE : Man Charged With Illegal Law Practice

A Fillmore man was has been charged with 41 felony counts for practicing law without a license.

Kenneth Arthur Schweit, 37, allegedly represented more than 25 victims over a 1 1/2-year period in everything from divorce, wills and labor matters.

“A lot of it was just general practice-type cases,” Deputy Dist. Atty. Rebecca Riley said.

Schweit’s alleged ruse was uncovered this past summer while he was representing a juvenile in Judge Steven Perren’s court. Perren had asked Schweit for a business card so he could be contacted, but Schweit said he did not have one. After the court date Perren tried to look up Schweit in State Bar records and could not find his name.

“That’s when the investigation began,” Riley said.

Schweit was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail on charges of grand theft for accepting money for his services and for practicing law without a license. His bail is set at $50,000.

The district attorney’s office said Thursday it is still looking for others who may have used Schweit’s services. Anyone with information should call the district attorney’s office at 654-5063.
