From Associated Press

The Florida Panthers seem to be coming up with a new star for every game.

The latest was Bill Lindsay, who had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Miami that stretched the Panthers’ winning streak to a franchise-best six games.

The last-place Sabres, who played without top scorer Pat LaFontaine, listed as day to day because of a sprained right ankle, were repeatedly frustrated by Panther goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck, who made 22 saves for his fifth consecutive victory.

New Jersey 4, Philadelphia 2--Steve Thomas had a goal and an assist as the Devils defeated the Flyers at East Rutherford, N.J., for only their second victory in eight games. John LeClair and Phil Crowe scored for the Flyers, who were without Eric Lindros for the fifth game in a row.

New York Rangers 4, Hartford 1--Ray Ferraro scored two goals and Alexei Kovalev added a goal and an assist at Hartford, Conn., as the Rangers won their fourth consecutive game.

St. Louis 4, New York Islanders 1--Geoff Courtnall figured in all the scoring with the sixth hat trick of his career and an assist and Grant Fuhr stopped 22 shots as the Blues defeated the host Islanders.

Chicago 4, Washington 1--Tony Amonte had a goal and an assist and Ed Belfour stopped 22 shots as the Blackhawks won at Landover, Md., extending the Capitals’ losing streak to a season-high three games. Chris Chelios had two assists to stretch his point-scoring streak to seven games.

Montreal 4, Calgary 0--Patrice Brisebois and Brian Savage scored 50 seconds apart to open the third period and lead the Canadiens over the struggling Flames at Calgary. The Flames, playing only their fourth home game in 17 outings this season because of renovations to the Saddledome, remain the only NHL team without a victory on home ice.

Toronto 3, Boston 1--Mike Gartner scored twice and Felix Potvin made 36 saves to lead the Maple Leafs over the Bruins at Boston. Tie Domi, better known for his fists than his goals, scored the game-winning goal for Toronto at 11:31 of the second period.

Detroit 5, San Jose 2--Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov scored as the Red Wings extended their winning streak to four games with a victory over the woeful Sharks at San Jose. Fedorov gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead at 14:09 of the second with a short-handed goal against Shark goalie Wade Flaherty.
