Panel to Meet on County Growth Policies

Share

A special Ventura County task force recently formed to study the county’s growth policies will hold its second meeting next month.

The task force, which met for the first time last week, includes Supervisors Maggie Kildee and Susan Lacey as well as officials from the county’s 10 cities.

The group was organized to re-evaluate the county’s Guidelines for Orderly Development, a 26-year-old policy that is credited with preventing urban sprawl. The document states that urban development should only occur in and around cities.

During last week’s meeting, however, the task force discussed changing the county’s definition of rural development, which allows for the building of just one residence per acre.

Some members said they determined the rural definition was too similar to the definition of urban development and suggested that it be changed to no more than one residence for every 10 acres.

The next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ventura County Government Center.
