ROAD SHOW: Santa Clarita residents have nothing...

ROAD SHOW: Santa Clarita residents have nothing good to say about their city’s roads. . . . But somebody does. It’s the Atlanta-based American City & County magazine, which awarded Santa Clarita first prize for its San Fernando Road street-widening project. Why? Because the project came in within budget. . . . The irony was not lost on folks at City Hall, who made note of the honor while gearing up for a meeting on traffic complaints.

LOST CITY: Where’s CalArts? Valencia, we always thought. But lately, info from the art school has said Santa Clarita. . . . Spokeswoman Anita Bonnell explained the school changed its address on advice of the Postal Service. Something about consolidating under the Santa Clarita name. It didn’t happen. So, as of Jan. 1, CalArts will revert to Valencia, where tonight there will be an open house for prospective students.

RETIREMENT: When named to the state Supreme Court in 1990, Armand Arabian, above, promised not to be a short-timer. He said he expected to stay on the court until 1998. . . . But now he’s coming home to the Valley early to go into the lucrative business of private judging--and to devote time to helping Armenia develop a sound justice system (A3).

HOME SECRETS: What’s lurking behind that fresh coat of paint on your dream house? Better find out. In Valley Business today (D7A-D7F), a story details the ins and outs of hiring a pro to inspect a house before it becomes your home.

WOMEN’S ISSUES: Valley Assemblywoman Sheila James Kuehl has been talking to women’s groups about whether to boycott Gov. Pete Wilson’s Women’s Conference today. She says there’s no easy answer. At issue is the gov’s thumbs-down to affirmative action. Kuehl says the event is worthwhile because so many women take it seriously. She, as always, is staying home.
