Knight-Ridder Urging Ban on Tobacco Ads: The Miami, Fla.-based newspaper publisher has begun urging its publications to ban Joe Camel and other cartoon-like ads that could be aimed at young people; phrases such as “cool,” “good life” or “alive with pleasure,” and advertising that romanticizes smoking or gives the impression that it leads to physical beauty or sexual attractiveness. The guidelines also urge a ban on all tobacco advertisements in newspaper sections intended for children. The guidelines are not mandatory. Copies of the policy, the guidelines say, will be sent to publishers of newspaper inserts such as Parade magazine. Knight-Ridder publications include leading dailies such as the Miami Herald and the Philadelphia Inquirer.
