Monsanto to Spin Off Plastics Unit: The St. Louis-based company, the world’s third-largest producer of the tough plastics used in car dashboards, toys and other products, has agreed to sell the business to Bayer for about $580 million. Under the agreement, the German company will acquire a business that has 1,400 employees and expected 1995 sales of about $700 million, Monsanto officials said. Monsanto said in June that it was weighing a sale of its styrene plastics operation. Bayer, known for the aspirin of the same name, also produces chemicals, dyes, fibers, rubber and other products.
