Wounded Judge ‘Doing Much Better’

A volunteer judge who was gunned down by a robber remained in critical condition Friday but was showing signs of recovery, a police spokesman said.

Charles Edward Salovesh, 59, of Brea “is doing much better,” Police Lt. Timm Browne said. Salovesh was shot twice in the chest Monday night outside a friend’s home in the 700 block of East Lake Drive as he was getting out of his Cadillac, police said.

Salovesh, a substitute judge at North County Municipal Court in Fullerton and a professor at the Western State University College of Law, also fired several rounds at the robber.

Police said the assailant, who apparently was not wounded, fled with $25. Both guns were recovered at the scene.

Investigators continued interviewing neighborhood residents Friday afternoon, but had not identified a suspect.
