Suspect Held After Crash Cuts Power to 2,400 Homes

A drunk-driving suspect rammed into a light pole early Sunday morning, knocking out power to about 2,400 homes.

The accident occurred about 2:50 a.m. when a vehicle ran into the pole near Avenida Valencia and El Camino Real.

Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Rich Paddock said the driver left the scene in the damaged vehicle and headed north on Interstate 5.

A California Highway Patrol officer who noticed a shower of sparks coming from a pickup ordered the suspect to stop near an exit in San Juan Capistrano.

Christopher Karns, 25, of San Clemente was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of felony drunk driving.

Tom Murnane, a spokesman for San Diego Gas & Electric Co., said emergency crews restored power to all the homes by 8:30 a.m.
