A Thousand Oaks man is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Ventura County Superior Court in the slaying of Oxnard resident Jose Ortiz, police said.

Adolfo Antonio Alvarez, 23, remains in jail in lieu of $250,000 bail.

Alvarez is accused of killing Ortiz, also 23, early Sunday morning with a small-caliber handgun in an alley outside an Oxnard pool hall, police said.

Witnesses said the shooting occurred after the men argued outside the Q-Club in the 2300 block of Oxnard Boulevard. Ortiz was pronounced dead at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, police said.

Through witness descriptions and a license plate number, Oxnard police linked the crime to Alvarez. He was arrested Sunday night at his home with the help of sheriff’s deputies, police said.

Although Alvarez is alleged to be a gang member, police do not think the shooting was gang-related.
