Frank Jones Massey Jr.; Biostatistics, Public Health Educator

Frank Jones Massey Jr., 75, expert and educator in biostatistics as applied to public health. A native of Portsmouth, N.H., Massey earned his doctorate from UC Berkeley and taught at universities in Maryland and Oregon before moving to UCLA in 1955. There, he helped build the department of biostatistics within the School of Public Health and the department of biomathematics in the School of Medicine. For several years, Massey was associate dean of the UCLA School of Public Health and chairman of his own department. He co-authored the top-selling textbook “Introduction to Statistical Analysis,” which is still published in six languages half a century after the original edition. Massey, who retired from UCLA in 1990, served on the boards of the Los Angeles Lung Assn. and the American Heart Assn. On Saturday in Santa Monica.
