CAMARILLO : Planners Delay Vote on Land-Use Plan

The Camarillo Planning Commission has delayed consideration of a sweeping land-use plan that could one day turn 290 acres of farmland near Camarillo Airport into residences, shops and businesses.

A divided commission voted 3 to 2 late Tuesday to postpone until next month a decision on the Ponderosa Corridor Specific Plan, a blueprint for the cropland just north of the Ventura Freeway.

Commissioners William Liebmann, Walter Lusk and Ed Miller said the continuance would allow for more reaction on the proposal from the public, including area pilots who oppose developing the property because of its proximity to Camarillo Airport.

Recent plane crashes in Fullerton and Oxnard contributed to the decision to continue the public hearing, officials said.

“There is a concern about safety,” Liebmann said. “Because it’s a pretty important issue for the city, we should hear any and all information about the project.”

Initial plans call for nearly 1,900 residences to be built on 107 acres, 38 acres of retail, commercial and office space and about 120 acres of parks and other open space.

The land is just outside the city limits, but is slated for annexation under the proposal that was postponed Tuesday night. The issue will be considered Dec. 19.
