VENTURA : Council to Discuss Plan for Avenue Area
At the request of Ventura Avenue area residents, the Ventura City Council tonight will discuss creating a plan for the redevelopment and enhancement of the Avenue and its surrounding community.
The plan, called a Specific Plan, would study how the area can be improved.
City officials estimate that the Specific Plan would cost $200,000 to $255,000 and take more than two years to complete.
The council is not scheduled to vote on the matter tonight, but to discuss whether such a document is needed or whether less expensive studies would be more appropriate.
The city drafted its downtown Specific Plan in 1992. It analyzed land-use policy, development and design guidelines, parking, traffic and a strategy for revitalizing the area.
The 190-page study is the blueprint for the city’s efforts to redevelop the historic downtown corridor.
Ventura Avenue area residents are pushing for a similar study of their neighborhood. After the council discussion, city staff will meet with westside residents Thursday to give a presentation on what the Specific Plan process would entail.
