San Gabriel Valley : GANG INJUNCTION

Share

The Pasadena branch of the NAACP on Tuesday filed legal papers opposing an injunction that prohibits reputed gang members in a troubled neighborhood from committing illegal acts as well as legal activities, such as carrying beepers and riding bicycles.

The branch of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People filed papers as a friend of the court challenging the injunction, said Burt Boorhees, the group’s attorney. “We filed . . . in opposition to the injunction on constitutional grounds,” he said.

A Pasadena judge recently granted a preliminary injunction against 30 alleged members of a gang that police say controls an 18-square-block area of northwest Pasadena.

A Tuesday hearing is scheduled on making the injunction permanent. The NAACP has also filed briefs asking the judge to delay that hearing for a month and to advise the reputed gang members that they are entitled to counsel.
