ORANGE COUNTY ALMANAC : Horse Meets Engine

Share

A number of hotels sprang up during the land boom of the late 1880s, creating a need for transportation.

A horse-drawn trolley carried travelers to the new hotels until its operator, Frank Tolle, replaced it with one driven by a steam engine. Residents whose horses were spooked by the engine called it “The Peanut Roaster” and “The Orange Dummy.”
