Boris Aplon; Supporting Actor on Broadway

Boris Aplon, 85, a resonant-voiced supporting actor on radio and television and in Broadway musicals. Aplon began his career with the Globe Theatre Shakespeare Co. at the Chicago World’s Fair and moved easily into Chicago-based network radio shows such as “Captain Midnight.” During World War II, he served in the Army, producing entertainment programs for military personnel until he was wounded in North Africa. Moving to New York, he worked steadily on television in soap operas and series such as Jackie Gleason’s “The Honeymooners.” He also had roles in more than 25 musicals on and off Broadway, including Sitting Bull in “Annie Get Your Gun,” the Wazir in “Kismet,” the cowardly lion in “The Wizard of Oz” and Dr. Egelhoffer in “The Sound of Music.” His own favorites were Leonard Bernstein’s original staging of “Candide” and the role of Lazar Wolf that he held for five years in the Broadway production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” On Monday in Westwood.
