Obituaries : Luis G. Gomez; Citrus Harvesting Foreman

Luis G. Gomez, a longtime Ventura County resident, died in his Ventura home Wednesday. He was 86.

Gomez was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and moved to Ventura County when he was 14. He became a naturalized citizen 40 years ago and worked as a citrus harvesting foreman for more than 40 years.

He was a half-century member of the Knights of Columbus and the Ventura Knights Color Guard. He was instrumental in establishing the Casa de Mexicano in Santa Paula and served on the committee that helped build Sacred Heart Church in Saticoy.

He is survived by his three daughters, Mary Velasquez and Carmen Gomez Lee of Ventura and Mary Helen Gonzales of Nevada City, Calif.; three sons, Robert J. Gomez and Fred Luis Gomez of Ventura, and Edward William Gomez of Pasadena; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

His wife, Dolores, died in 1992.

Visitation is Sunday from 5 until 8 p.m. at Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church and entombment will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
