The 16-year-old footbridge that spans Barranca Parkway in Woodbridge Village will be replaced with a wooden structure, council members decided this week, rejecting alternate proposals for cement or steel structures.
The bridge was damaged in February when it was struck by the upraised forks of a passing trash truck. The damage allowed dry rot to weaken the bridge, which settled four inches into the ground on one side.
The chemically treated wooden span will cost the city about $90,000. A steel or concrete bridge could have cost an additional $70,000 and would have taken significantly longer to install, Public Works Director Barry McClellan said.
Installation of the new bridge will begin in January and is projected to take about four weeks.
