Southeast : Action Figure Inspires These Students to Act
The popularity of one after-school TV program might inspire more study among Compton elementary students.
Power Ranger action figures have replaced gold stars as the prize in this month’s reading and math competitions among Compton Unified School District’s 16,000 elementary students.
The program uses the popularity of the television heroes to encourage more dedication to homework, district spokeswoman Christine Sanchez said.
Teachers awarded more than 1,000 Power Rangers last month to students who submitted the best essays on Thanksgiving. More competitions are scheduled through June in other subjects.
Cerritos-based Bandai America Inc. gave the district 19,000 of the toys. Several hundred toys have also been given to children of local homeless families, a district representative said.
