Citrus Packinghouse History to Be Written

Cal State Fullerton is compiling a commemorative volume and archival information on one of the county’s last remaining packinghouses, which will celebrate its 85th anniversary in 1997.

Villa Park Orchards Assn., which packs citrus for central California as well as San Diego, Riverside, Orange and Ventura counties, commissioned the history and provided an $18,000 grant to compile it.

Cultural historians will conduct interviews and gather old newspaper clippings to include in the volume. Those being interviewed include early growers and former directors and employees of the packinghouse.

Villa Park Orchards is one of the nation’s largest packinghouses for oranges, grapefruit and tangerines bearing the Sunkist label. Its biggest customers are in Japan and Hong Kong.
