Southern California may no longer be the promised land of sports that it was when the Dodgers and Lakers moved west. But if interest in new stadiums and arenas is any guide, the Los Angeles area is not fading as a sports town, but in transition. Football stadiums to lure replacements for the departed Rams and Raiders are the main action. This map shows locations being mentioned as sites for new stadiums and arenas, as well as planned renovations of existing facilities.

Dodger Stadium: Football stadium may be built in the parking lot for an NFL expansion franchise sought by Dodgers owner Peter O’Malley.

Rose Bowl: The city of Pasadena would like an overhaul of its famous but aging football stadium.

Union Station: A proposed arena over train tracks is in the talking stage, would be part of high-rise Gateway project.

Unocal: Indoor arena is being discussed by owners of former Unocal headquarters.

Coliseum: Another renovation of the venerable stadium is planned. The Sports Arena may also be improved.

Hollywood Park: A football stadium for an NFL team is being discussed as part of $250-million sports complex.

The Forum: The owner of The Forum, which opened in 1967, has expressed interest in building a more modern arena on the site.

El Segundo: A forty-seven acre parcel is one of the sites under official consideration for new stadium to get an NFL team.

Taylor yards: Southern Pacific land near Chinatown has been discussed as the possible site of a hockey and basketball arena.

West Los Angeles: Talk of an NFL and UCLA football stadium near L.A. National Cemetery roused opposition in Brentwood.

Van Nuys: Former Air National Guard base at Van Nuys Airport was touted for NFL stadium, but is regarded as unlikely.

Van Nuys: Abandoned GM plant drew some interest but is no longer active as a stadium site.

Orange County:

Plans for a large “SportsTown” complex that would link Anaheim Stadium to the Pond, perhaps to include a football stadium, are to be announced by early January.
