A veteran Ventura County prosecutor was named the newest court commissioner Tuesday, court officials said.

The county’s 27 judges picked Gary K. Barrett, 49, for the $92,000-a-year job over 220 candidates.

“I’ve been seeking an appointment as a commissioner or a judge for the past three years,” Barrett said. “I’m honored.”

Barrett fills a vacancy created by Dave Long’s elevation to the Municipal Court. Barrett will work at the East Valley Courthouse in Simi Valley, presiding over traffic court and hearing small-claims matters.

Barrett joined the Ventura County district attorney’s office in 1985 and prosecuted felony crimes.

The former Santa Paula police officer graduated from Mid-Valley College of Law in 1979 and worked in private practice before becoming a prosecutor. He is married and lives in Thousand Oaks.

He begins work as a court commissioner Dec. 22.
