FDA Approves Drug for Herpes: SmithKline Beecham said the Food and Drug Administration cleared its antiviral drug Famvir for treatment of recurrent episodes of genital herpes. The drug is already approved for treatment of shingles in the U.S. and almost 40 other countries and generated $24 million in sales in 1994. SmithKline said at least 31 million U.S. residents have genital herpes, which is spread through sexual contact.
