OXNARD : Man Enters Plea in Insurance Fraud Case
A 54-year-old Oxnard man who authorities allege fraudulently received more than $155,000 in disability and medical expenses during the last seven years pleaded not guilty Friday in Municipal Court.
Larry G. Cobos was arraigned on four counts of workers’ compensation insurance fraud.
He pleaded not guilty to giving false information to four insurance companies to obtain disability benefits dating back to 1988.
Cobos claimed that a back injury on Sept. 30, 1994--his first day on a job as a cement mason--prevented him from working for seven months, prosecutors said. An insurance carrier paid disability benefits to Cobos for that period, they said.
An investigation by the California Department of Insurance revealed Cobos had made similar claims to other insurance companies, prosecutors said.
Cobos was released on $100,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 4.
