NEWPORT BEACH : Sleighless Santa Claus Breezes In

Santa and Mrs. Claus made a whirlwind visit to the city’s elementary schools Friday, not in the customary sleigh but in a high-tech police helicopter.

With temperatures in the upper 60s, the Clauses explained, the sleigh, which requires snow to operate, was impractical.

The beautiful weather, however, didn’t stop them from carrying out their mission of passing out hugs and candy canes, and listening to youngsters’ holiday wishes.

The visit was part of an annual holiday program by the Newport Beach Police Department to reach out to children.

“We try to bring these kids a feeling of safety and security,” Sgt. Andy Gonis said. “Things like this help them enjoy childhood.”

Officers said it also promotes holiday spirit and strengthens the Police Department’s ties with the community. They estimated that nearly 4,000 children at eight schools saw the Clauses this year.

“For my kids, it was great,” said Cathy Kinney, who recalled sitting on Santa’s lap 25 years ago when she was a student at the former Corona del Mar Elementary School.

Her 5-year-old son, Peter, was one of those on hand for Friday’s festivities. “He thought it was cool because police are cool,” she said. “And with Santa here it was even better.”
