The city of San Fernando and the San Fernando Lions Club will hold a free, annual Christmas marionette show on Thursday.

More than 400 children are expected to attend the show, performed by legendary puppeteer Bob Baker. The performance will feature 50 of Baker’s collection of 3,000 puppets, including the Sandman, Santa, Elves, Reindeer and the Skating Bear.

In addition to the show, youngsters can have their photographs taken with Santa Claus, and gifts and refreshments will be passed out.

Baker’s marionettes, which have appeared in commercials, variety shows, fairs, and even movies--such as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”--have been performing for the children of San Fernando since the 1950s, through an arrangement with the San Fernando Lions Club.

The historic Bob Baker Theater in downtown Los Angeles is the longest-running marionette theater in the United States.

The free Christmas show will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. inside the gym at Recreation Park, 208 Park Ave., San Fernando.
