An exhibit featuring artwork and memorabilia from the Million Man March opens today at a temporary gallery in Leimert Park.

The show, “A Million Men, A Million Reasons: A Community Multimedia Reflection on the Million Man March,” includes photographs taken by participants of the October march on Washington, news clippings about the event and 50 pairs of shoes that marchers wore.

Community Rebuild, a nonprofit corporation that helps local businesses, is sponsoring the show, along with Leimert Park Village merchants.

“We have a few staff members who went to the march, and when they came back they had photos they’d taken,” said Monica Smith, an administrative assistant at Community Rebuild. “The photos were so catching and there was so much emotion that was shown,” she said.

Staff members enlarged the photos and gathered mementos from other marchers for the exhibit.

The show will have evening hours so that patrons of several nearby jazz clubs can stop by. The gallery is at 4337 Degnan Blvd., and the show runs through Dec. 31.
