COSTA MESA : Council Offers New Fairview Park Plan

Even after years of debate, it seems the community cannot reach consensus on what to do with Fairview Park.

For years, residents have argued over whether to keep the 114-acre park at Adams and Placentia avenues as it is, one of the few undeveloped plots of land in the city, or turn it into athletic fields.

But the City Council hopes it can satisfy all sides with its latest plan, which it presented at its meeting Monday.

The proposal is to keep most of the park as it is and to beautify it by planting native plants and flowers. The council will, however, keep open the option of developing one corner of the land, near Estancia High School, for athletic fields.

Mayor Joe Erickson said the council did not feel it was necessary to commit all the land to athletic fields. One reason is that the city is in final negotiations with Newport-Mesa Unified School District and the Orange County Fair and Exposition Center to convert farmland adjacent to Costa Mesa High School into a large recreational facility.

The council will discuss the plan again at its Jan. 2 meeting.
