Special Election to Fill Tucker’s Seat Scheduled for March 26
Gov. Pete Wilson announced Wednesday that a special election to fill the congressional seat left vacant by the resignation of Walter R. Tucker III will be held March 26, coinciding with the statewide primary vote.
Tucker resigned from Congress last week after being convicted by a federal jury of extorting $30,000 in bribes and cheating on his income tax while he was the mayor of Compton in 1991-92.
The former congressman is scheduled to be sentenced March 18, eight days before the special election. If no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote, a runoff will take place May 21.
In the wake of his resignation, several candidates have already announced their intention to run for the seat. Among them are Tucker’s wife, Robin, and Assemblyman Willard H. Murray Jr. (D-Paramount). Compton City Clerk Charles Davis has also said that he will run and Assemblywoman Juanita McDonald (D-Carson) has indicated she is leaning toward entering the race.
