In a Tight Spot

Men who wear size 40 or larger trousers--or women of similar girth--should refuse seats in the first row bulkhead of coach sections of MD-88 and Boeing 757 aircraft. On them the rear edge of the tray table, which unfolds from its housing in the arm rest, offers only 13 inches of clearance in front of the seat-back.

A circle 13 inches in diameter has a circumference of 40.84 inches, so the table’s edge will crease a belly size 40 or larger. This also applies to some seats just behind over-wing emergency exits, and, perhaps, to similar seats on the other aircraft on Delta and other lines.
