A preview of next year’s economy in the five-county area, based on projections by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp.:
San Bernardino/Riverside Counties
The Best and the Worst: San Bernardino and Riverside counties, which are calculated together, are projected to have the Southland’s fastest job growth in 1996, with an increase of 2.8% in nonfarm jobs. Population is also growing quickly, with 48,000 people expected to move into the region--a 1.6% jump. The unemployment rate will probably decline from 8.7% to 8.3%, remaining the highest in the area. The counties also are projected to have the Southland’s highest office vacancy rates, with more than one in five offices empty. Retail sales should rise 6.1%, and housing permits are expected to jump 15.0%.
