Few Firms Paying Christmas Bonuses, Study Finds: Christmas bonuses are a thing of the past for most Australian companies, research by a human resources company has found. Less than 10% of the 60 companies, surveyed by Melbourne-based Morgan and Banks in recent weeks, said they would pay Christmas bonuses. Similar research conducted in the 1970s showed that about half of Australia’s companies paid bonuses. Morgan and Banks spokesman John Rawlinson said some companies have replaced Christmas bonuses with performance-related bonuses, often paid at the end of their financial year. Rawlinson said many companies scrapped Christmas bonuses during a recession in the late 1980s. He said many employers fear Christmas bonuses could be viewed as regular benefits.
