John Conrad Bushman, 81, author and former professor of English at Cal State L.A. A native of Chicago, Bushman was educated at the University of Michigan and the University of Illinois, where he began his teaching career. He then taught English at St. Louis University for seven years and in 1953 moved to the fledgling Cal State L.A. He taught English and American Studies there and did extensive research on the fiction of writer Stephen Crane and on American popular culture. Bushman wrote four books that were widely used in universities. He retired in 1976. On Monday in Los Angeles.
