Chemical Mix Injures Firefighter

SAUGUS — The mixture of two chemicals at a plant created a noxious cloud Friday evening, injuring one of the Los Angeles County firefighters and hazardous materials team members who fought to contain fumes, officials said.
A fire captain suffered minor chemical burns to his hands at the Hasa Chemicals plant near the intersection of San Fernando Road and Drayton Street and was taken to a local hospital, Fire Department Supervisor Cheryl Patterson said.
The chemical cloud was spotted about 6:45 p.m., Patterson said. It was not immediately known how the two chemicals mixed or whether the combination was dangerous to inhale, but businesses and a senior citizens’ home in the area were evacuated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Hasa manufactures chemicals used in swimming pools, Patterson said. The hazardous materials team continued to clean up the mix late Friday.
